Joseph E. Putnam was born on March 25th, 1979 in Omaha, NE. At age six, Joe moved to Lexington, Kentucky where still resides today. Joe is happily married to his wife, Leigh Putnam. He currently has one child, Shelby Alexander, who is two years old. Joe is currently a parishioner of Christ the King Church, original founder of the Lexington Charity Club and a member of Greenbrier Country Club.
Growing up, Joe attended Christ the King School for grade school. For high school, Joe attended Lexington Catholic High School for two years and then transferred to Sayre School where he graduated in 1997. Following high school, Joe attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Joe remained in Dallas for approximately one year and then returned to University of Kentucky. Joe graduated from U of K in December of 2001 with a degree in Finance and Accounting.
Post College, Joe started his career with CBA Pharma, a Putnam founded oncology based pharmaceutical company based in Lexington and the sole reason why the Putnam’s moved to Lexington in 1985. He still remains in an advisory role with the company today. In September of 2002, Joe took his interest in healthcare and opted to pursue a different pathway in the healthcare field taking on a career path in orthopedic sales with Stryker Orthopedics. Joe worked with Stryker for 10 years where he then transferred to one of the largest orthopedic companies in the world, Zimmer Biomet. Joe currently is employed by Zimmer Biomet today and is celebrating 15 years in the business in 2017.
Following his dream and desire to be a self-made entrepreneur, Joe founded the private equity and venture capital company, Bluegrass Hathaway, in May of 2012. Bluegrass Hathaway’s primary focus is on the management and acquisition of companies. Additionally, Bluegrass Hathaway focuses on making investments in start-up business ideas and provides outside consulting expertise to small businesses.
Since May of 2012, Bluegrass Hathaway has funded 4 companies and been involved in 3 start-ups all in the areas of food, real estate, mobile technology, merchant services, logistics and healthcare. In addition, Bluegrass Hathaway has made 3 investments into privately held companies all in the personal health and healthcare sector. The goal is of Bluegrass Hathaway is to reach approximately 50 acquisitions by 2025.
Most importantly, Joe looks to be the best person he can be, day in and day out. It is important to him to help as many people as possible along the way and believes that everyone should have the opportunity to live the highest quality life. Joe will listen to anyone and help anyone who asks him for advice and wants to build a friendship and relationship.
